Mike Portnoy: Good question! Weve been asking ourselves that one for 20 years! I mean, if you look at a Dream Theater show, it is ninety-five percent guys and five percent are their wives or girlfriends.

Mike Vennart (Oceansize): I Think it’s because girls who are not musicians have a fundamental lack of understanding of time signatures. Every girlfriend  Iv´e ever bad Iv´e tried to explain why time signatures exist in the first place, and Iv´e tried to count 4/4, and they have no understanding of even why we need time signatures. And that’s what prog’s all about, complication.

John Courtney (Oceansize) I think maybe it was oriented around the instrument. Not that girls can’t be into technical nusic, of course, but I think it was very much on that rather pompous muso level. Iv´e played some 70s stuff to my girlfriend- some Camel and Yes. She can’t bear it.” What’s this Tudor music you’re lpaying?” she’ll ask. But I´ll play some contemporary stuff that I`d class as prog – some Mew or Oceansize – and she doesn’t turn her nose up to that.

Steven Wilson: I’m not sure that’s true. But generally guys tend to be a lot more obsessive about collecting music. There are certain styles of prog that involve wilfully complex music; I don’t expect many women listen to Magma or Van Der Graaf Generator. We have a lot more girls in our audience now, maybe they respond to the songwriting side of fthings?

Steve Hacket: Too many notes. Julian Colbeck (Hackett’s keyboard player] and I had this conversation. He’s been in pop bands and played with Yes, and he said, “Girls don’t like it, there’s too many notes”. So there’s your answer.
